I'm finally back with another Top 5 Wednesday post! I've been missing out on it for two months, and now I decided to get back into it - because there are some interesting topics this month. The topic for the first week of October is to choose Top 5 Terrible Covers. As some of you may know already, book covers is a really important thing for me - and I might not buy a book if I don't like the cover. But in this post, I'm going to choose books that I've read (and quite enjoyed), that I think actually have a terrible cover. All of these are my personal opinion, so you might think differently :)) Here's the list in no particular order.
Some of you might not totally agree with me on this, but I think this edition of The Hobbit has a terrible cover. I think it has something to do with it being published a long time ago, in the 1980s. I absolutely love the book, but unfortunately I only have this edition - which the cover I don't really like. I don't know if it's because there's too much green on the cover, or something else - it's just not the best cover for this amazing book. Thankfully, The Hobbit was then republished for numerous times with far better covers like I've shown below ↓↓↓. I really want to buy a nicer edition of The Hobbit, just for my collection ㅠㅠ
Even though I quite enjoyed this book, I wasn't very fond of the cover (as well as the sequel, which has a very similar cover). I think the cover lacks something; maybe because the background is too white or too plain. And I'm not really loving the typeface combination in this cover; the serif and script font doesn't complement each other. I'm also not a big fan of the decorative shapes at the top and bottom. But the image at the center is quite cute.
This one is actually pretty fun and cute; which represents the story about high school students (if I'm not mistaken). But for me, personally, the cover is not really appealing. I think the colors on this cover are a bit too soft. The layout is also a bit off; like how the author's name is out of place, and the word novel is placed horizontally when the title is diagonal.
Namaku Hiroko by Nh. Dini
I didn't have a review for this one because I read this book years ago. I had to read this book for Bahasa Indonesia class back when I was in high school, I think. I certainly didn't enjoy the book, and the cover totally freaked me out - because it's super creepy.
Firdaus Mimpi by Agnes Jessica
The last one, unfortunately, I have not read yet - but I'm running out of choices. I actually wanted to nominate Agnes Jessica's Jejak Kupu-Kupu old cover, but couldn't find a decent picture to display. So about this cover... the gradient of blue is a little bit overwhelming. The placement of the title is a little bit out of place (and might be difficult to read). And the decorative elements is just not to my liking.
It surprised me how it was quite difficult for me to find 5 Terrible Covers from my read. Now I realized that I don't read that many books with terrible covers. Anyway, I hope Indonesian publishers would improve a lot more in terms of book cover. English books have amazing book covers, even though they're simple and doesn't use a lot of elements. Next week's topic is to choose Top 5 Female Characters! Exciting! We'll see if I have time to make that post ;) Bye!
