Honestly speaking, I didn't really understand today's challenge at first. The 14th challenge is to 'tell us your deal breakers'. In my mind I was thinking, what is 'deal breakers' actually? I'm really sorry for my lack of understanding (or vocabulary). But after reading other people's posts related with this challenge, it seems like deal breakers is things that would turn me off from a book. There are actually various things that could turn me off while reading. What are the things that could turn you off from a book? Share your own deal breakers or join the challenge here.
I've given this challenge a lot of thought; thinking back on what are the books that I didn't really enjoy and why that happened. So here are some of my deal breakers.
1. I don't understand.
Sometimes, there are story that has become too complicated for me to understand. And there are also times when the flow of the story goes back and forth, making me confused and doesn't get what the author is trying to say. I don't really know what's the problem, what's the point of the story, and so on. When I don't understand what's going on in the story, I lose interest and become less engaged with the book. Slowly, this kind of book will turn me off.
2. Too much repetition.
It's okay to emphasize on some things, so readers can remember/see it as an important point. But repeating it too much will only make the book longer, more boring (because I'll be saying 'I get that already.'), and doesn't really help the plot.
3. Characters with personalities I'm not fond of.
This doesn't mean I always hate the bad guys. There's possibility for me to like a villain, if there's a good reason behind his/her actions. But I've seen the main characters acted so ridiculously, which I would never approve in real life. When a book has this kind of characters, I keep being annoyed as I read through the book, and it's not good. I think every character's action should have a reason behind it, so the readers can sympathize.
4. Has too many things going on at the same time.
This one is a little bit related with #1.There are stories I've read that has too many things going on, until it loses focus from the main character and the main conflict. Sometimes it's okay if those other stuffs are supporting the plot, but if it's useless, I easily get tired of it.
5. Slow-paced.
I can handle slow-paced story if I really like the author's writing style. But there are also times when I feel like the story is going round and round in the same place for too long. With this kind of book, I usually keep asking the question: "is something going to happen, like, soon?".
