15 Days Book Blogging Challenge: Day 1 - Confessions

.

I come across something very interesting at http://surgabukuku.wordpress.com/ and http://lustandcoffee.wordpress.com/, which is a book blogging challenge created by http://goodbooksandgoodwine.com :) I am really happy when there's this kind of thing (sort of like 55 Reading Questions like I did last year, which is extremely fun to do). As the title stated, I will have to do this for 15 days (I'm not sure if I'll be able to do this everyday, but I promise to do all 15). So here goes day one: Make 15 Book Related Confessions. (For those who want to join, the image for complete challenge below :))

1. I am such a huge spender on books, I constantly buy books - like two or three times a month (?). I feel like something is missing when I don't buy or order books. This of course, causes my TBR list to become extremely high. People who came into my room always asked if I have already finished reading all the books I have. My answer is always no. Because it seems like I was born with a never-ending reading list :)

2. I carry a book with me almost all the time when I'm outside the house, because I never know when I'll have to wait. At times like taking my mom to the dentist or waiting at the hair salon, book is always the best company. Since I'm a certified introvert, it always makes me feel good to be alone with a good book sometimes :)

3. In my bookshelves, I tend to arrange them according to height. I feel really good when I look at my shelves and each book in a row have the same height. Of course sometimes it's unavoidable and I have to put tall books besides the short ones. But I always rearrange my bookshelves about once a year - while cleaning it up.

4. Beautiful book cover is my weakness. I tend to buy books which have covers that makes me happy and proud when I'm reading it in public. Especially for English books, if I know the book is good, I always look for the 'best-looking-edition' before ordering it. I admit it, I'm a 'visual-person'. And sometimes, yes, beautiful book cover can bring disappointment. Which lead to the famous line: "Do not judge a book by it's cover." But I honestly can't. I'm sorry.

5. These days, I buy more books through online-bookstore rather than in a bookstore. I love the internet. And I still love going to the bookstore. But I feel like online-shopping is more convenient, because I just have to wait for the package to come (especially with books that I know I want to buy) instead of carrying heavy plastic bags. And there are chances of getting discounted or autographed books! But still, both has their own different charms :)

6. I love plastic-wrapping my books! It's something I learn from a friend back in elementary school, and it helps keeping my book in a good shape. When I read, I sometimes have a drink or snack with me. And if water spills on the cover, it's going to be a disaster if it's not plastic wrapped. I was saved by it several times. Thank you, plastic.

7. For series books, I usually wait for the series to end and then start reading it. Because I hate cliffhanging situations - and most series books do that. So even when a series becomes a trend, I hold my desire to read it. Sometimes I'm too late; when I realize it's so good and hyped up about it, everyone's already passed that phase. But I don't care, really.

8. Paperbacks! Compared to hardcovers and e-book, I still love paperbacks. Hardcovers are expensive, and even though they're comfortable to read (my last Harry Potter book is in hardcover), it's too heavy. As for e-book, I have tried reading them (in the computer. Unfortunately still haven't got the urge to buy an e-reader). But it doesn't feel as good as paperbacks. All the e-books I've got from the internet still left unread in a folder, somewhere..

9. I love reading English books as much as Indonesian books. After doing this book-blogging thing, my reading is more towards Indonesian books - because reading English books always took me a long time (I also want to improve my vocab, so I enjoyed it slowly) which makes me unable to update much on the blog. This is why, there are still so many  English books unread in my shelves. But since I have reduced my reading challenge, I will read more English books - for my own pleasure.

10. Movie adaptations are mostly disappointing. I've written about 10 movie adaptation review on this blog, and most of them are not as good as the book. Usually, the movie tend to leave out several details or scenes. Strangely, I still watch these movie adaptations - because they turn the stories into reality.

11. I easily fall in love with a great character. I absolutely love it when the author gives us everything we have to know about a character's life. Sometimes I feel like I know the character so well, like a really good friend of mine. The kind of characters that makes me feel I'm living their life. Which is practically George R.R. Martin's quote - "A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies, the man who never reads lives only one."

12. Books have changed my life. Literally. One of the most influential books I've read has got to be The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch. And even a fiction book like Life of Pi by Yann Martel or books by Mitch Albom also changed my perspective about life. Sometimes books taught me lessons that my parents never did.

13. I am very biased towards my favorite authors. I have lots of favorite authors and when they release a new book, I'm always so excited to buy it (even when I don't know what the story's going to be). My judgement towards the book will also be somehow biased, because it's my favorite author! But in my book reviews, I always try to be as objective as I can.

14. One of the best things about being a book-blogger, is the chance of getting free books! Even though not much, I have experienced getting book-review requests from publishers. It makes me feel so proud and accomplished, because I was just doing this book-blogging thing leisurely :')
15. I recently developed a habit of reading at midnight. Lately I've been busy with other stuffs, which causes me unable to read during the day (or sometimes I can, but in a fairly short time). But I never want to let a day goes by without reading. And so after I'm done doing everything and ready for bed, I just started reading - and it can lasts for hours. Sleeping late is not a very good habit, and I'm trying to fix that. I will talk more about bedtime reading ritual in tomorrow's challenge! Bye!

  3. I share #2, 5 and 10! Particularly #5, with the social medias, I get to know new books far before I can get to (offline) bookstore. So, when I eventually get to (offline) bookstore, it's like...meh...no new books, I knew all of that already. LOL!
